" Farmer Al Falfa's Ape Girl "

In the first years of the Thirties, the medium of animation was virtually free from restrictive pressures of censorships .
The majority of the cartoons of this period feature risquè material, expecially the Fleischers and Van Beuren productions .
But Terrytoons too show their quota of sex-related material.
A relatively unknown short, " Farmer Al Falfa's Ape Girl " ( 1932 ), could probably win the prize as being the cartoon which shows more outrageous gags than any other one .

The plot narrates of Farmer Al Falfa's hunting exploration, but our hero only appears near the end of the picture. Before his appearence, we can see a number of gags with protagonist the title character, a beautiful female version of Tarzan of the Apes .
This marvellous "Ape Girl" wears only a bikini top and a really short mini skirt which does not leave anything to imagination!
We can see her having a erotic massage, in which a monkey is giving her a leg and butt rub down, riding a giant ape, swimming while exposing nudity (from the bottom down), using a pair of fish as skates and skating on the water, a hippo as a boat and much more .
When finally our Al Falfa and his faithful pup enter in the picture, she attacks the farmer and, as time goes by and springtime arrives, we see the destiny of our hero: father of a number of Al Falfa-look-a-like kiddies, the last reference to sex in the cartoon .
Enjoy some pics from this pre-Code extravaganza. I hope you'll appreciate the fact that this is no a reissue of the cartoon and it shows original intact title cards.

Coal Black and De Sebben Dwarfs

Thanks to John Kricfalusi, the ASIFA Archive owns the best print of Bob Clampett's masterpiece "Coal Black and de Sebben Dwarfs" I've ever seen. To see how wonderful it is, take a look at these pictures, comparing the ASIFA print to one of the few currently in circulation:

And remember, if you want to save your favorite cartoons, be sure to support ASIFA!

" Swing You Sinners " UPDATE !

Thanks to Dan Porceddu for these pics from the magnificent " Swing You Sinners " .
This screenshots show what happens near the end of the cartoon , when Bimbo is chased by hundreds of ghosts in a scene which I suppose sure disturbed the dreams of children in the Thirties ......( Would have ever Disney dare to do that ? Answer : NO ! )

Looney Tunes Golden Collection Volume 3

Howdy, folks!
The release of the third volume from the Looney Tunes Golden Collection series is probably one of this year's greatest events for classic animation fans. If you love the theatrical Warner Bros. cartoons from the golden age, then this is the dvd set you've been waiting for! In this volume, you will find a great selection of shorts, which spans from the studio's debut (the first LT from 1930, "Sinkin' in the Bathtub", is included) to its latter years (the 1960s). The restoration of the cartoons is just amazing: most of them have never looked so good since their original release! But don’t worry, none of these cartoons suffers the effects of the DVNR process, noticeable on some cartoons on the previous volumes. The only thing that really disappointed me about this set is the fact that very few original titles have been restored, while most of the cartoons still have their Blue Ribbon reissue titles.
That’s all for now, we'll post more details on this set as soon as we can , so ... stay tooned , folks !

" Swing You Sinners "

Welcome here , folks !

First thing I want to do is to re-direct you to one of the most surreal cartoons ever made , a favorite of mine ( and I suppose of yours after you will have seen it ) : " Swing You Sinners " .

Way back in 1930 , the Fleischers ' answer to Disney was not trying to compete with the fairy tales adaptations or the cute characters ( that was Disney's own territory ) , but trying to do something really original with the animation medium , using hot jazz and imaginative gags as " traits d'union " between reality and fantasy .

These concepts were behind the creation of such unique masterpieces like " Swing You Sinners " ( the strangest and most bizzarre of them all ! ) , " Bimbo's Initiation , " Minnie The Moocher ".....This cartoon is also most notable because it stars the character of Bimbo , one of the very few characters of the Thirties which shows no resemblance to Mickey Mouse . I could write for hours analyzing this magnificent cartoon but.....

Stop talking now ! It's time to watch Classic Cartoons ! ( Feel free to post your comments about the short here , but first...go watch it ! )
